Welcome to the Albuquerque Children’s Art Studio! We are dedicated to providing hands on visual arts experiences especially for children. We have a fully stocked art studio that introduces children to new materials and encourages creative exploration in a safe and supportive environment.

We offer art classes in three age groups: Young children and their grownups, preschoolers, and school age children 5-12 years old. Each week we explore new art materials and create new projects. Our classes focus on basic art techniques and build on the child’s imagination. No membership is required, but class space is limited so reservations are suggested.

Our art camps are a fun and educational way for your child to spend time when school is not in session. We offer holiday camps, spring, fall, winter and summer break camps.

We also offer field trips and birthday party hosting. Follow the menu at the left of the screen for more information on these services.

Classes

Our Mixed Media class is designed to inspire creativity and introduce children to a variety of art mediums and techniques. This class explores the basic artistic elements of color, line, shape and texture through a wide variety of fun materials. Your child will learn how to use tools, develop techniques, and explore their imagination. We begin with 2 dimensional representation and move into 3-D projects. Each class is developmental and builds your child’s knowledge and confidence.

Thursday class, ages 5 and up, from 4:30-6:30

Saturday class, ages 4 and up, from 10:00-12:00

My Grownup and Me class is for children 2-4 years of age. This developmental class is designed to give children the freedom to explore art materials in a supportive and inviting setting. Children explore paint, markers, oil pastels, collage materials, cutting, gluing and clay! With parent support, children gain confidence in their skills and explore their own creativity.

Friday Class, ages 2-4 years, from 10:00-11:30

Fall 2011 Schedule

September

Children get hands on and learn about the “energy” of paint! Your child will explore color with paint mixing! We see how lines, textures and shapes transform as we paint and draw. Children are encouraged to use their imaginations and create with freedom of expression. We will also create formal pieces by exploring simple techniques, learning observation skills, and exploring artistic styles such as realism and abstract painting. Children will use tempera and acrylic paints on canvas and other surfaces to produce self portraits, still life, and abstract paintings.

October

This month begins with a cultural exploration of masks from around the world. Children will look at masks and create their very own unique paper maché masks.

What do a tennis ball, a wooden spoon and a sock have in common? They all make excellent puppets! This unit is about puppet making and storytelling. Children create puppets and props in this imaginative class.

Finally we explore folk art from Mexico! Join us in creating sugar skulls and tin work pieces, while learning about Dia de Los Muertos.

November

This month we learn about clay! Pinching, rolling, twisting, sculpting, spinning, and glazing. We will begin with basic hand building and work our way toward the wheel. Children will learn about the phases of drying and firing clay from greenware to finished product. Children will create special Thanksgiving dishes and napkin rings to make your holiday table extra special! These projects will take three weeks to finish, we cannot accept single session drop in students for this month.

We will be closed November 24-27.

December

The holiday season is a wonderful time for sharing handmade art. Children will work in clay, paint, and discover the process of printmaking this month. We will make holiday ornaments, as well as printed and watercolor greeting cards.s

December 22nd will be our last class.
